Nummy Muffin Cocoa Butter: Artists: The Arrogant Worms

The Arrogant Worms: Boy are they Canadian!
REVIEW BY ROY

When I first started tracking down bands to play on Nummy Muffin Cocoa Butter, I only knew about the staples: Weird Al, Monty Python, Tom Lehrer, Spike Jones and the like. Seeking to get a clue, I started to e-mail  DJ's and other people who knew a great deal about novelty music, asking if they could recommend any bands. Almost all of them included the Arrogant Worms in their list. It's easy to see why.

The only Arrogant Worms CD NMCB has (besides a Christmas CD) is a live recording entitled, appropriately enough, "Live Bait". From the get-go, it's obvious that the audience is in love with the band, and that they have amassed a huge following. With songs such as "Jesus' Brother Bob" and "Mounted Animal Nature Trail", the Arrogant Worms combine painfully witty lyrics with talented vocal styling.

Where the Arrogant Worms truly shine, however, is in the way they constantly make jokes about their beloved homeland, Canada. As a gluttonous American, I've always enjoyed a good laugh at Canada's coldness, its apparent singular dullness, and its lack of crime, importance, and an army. I never dreamed, however, that Canadians would laugh at their own country for the very same reasons Americans do! The Arrogant Worms changed all that. With songs such as "Canada's Really Big" and "The Mountie Song", we can all laugh at Canada's expense, even if we don't get all the jokes.

Of course, everything I just said is pure fluff compared to the real reason I'm in love with the Arrogant Worms CD. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the pirate life, and the last song on Live Bait is one of the best "sea songs" I've ever heard. It's called the "Last Saskatchewan Pirate", and to put it simply, it rocks.

ARRR!
