THE FLYING FISH SAILORS: I'm hopelessly Biased
this review is by Roy

Okay, first of all, if you've read my review of the Arrogant Worms, then you know that I'm really into pirates. That being said, it should come as no surprise that I REALLY like a band called the Flying Fish Sailors. First, a little background.

The Flying Fish Sailors are a band that is most at home at the Renaissance festival. They have often been caught "playing jigs", being merry, and playing traditional Irish/Celtic tunes. There are some hidden factors, however, that make The Flying Fish Sailors the geniuses they are.

First of all, they're damn good. As a frequenter of the Texas Renaissance Festival, I've heard a number of happy bands playing jigs before, and I can honestly say that only the FFS have made me actually want to smile or dance.

Secondly, their original songs are almost always inevitably hilarious, and usually deal with modern-day topics. Songs such as
"Mow, Johnny, Mow", "The Flu Pandemic", and "A Horse Named Bill" are good examples of this. They even cover Queen's "We will Rock You", changing the title to "Peaceful Warrior" and singing about new age crystal people. No one has truly lived until they've heard the famous "We Will Rock You" solo rendered perfectly with a fiddle.

Something else should be noted here. The FFS's first album was almost all traditional. As time has gone on, more and more of their songs have been original, silly, and witty. Their new album entitled "Loch Ness Monster" is supposed to be almost entirely goofy, and has songs about all sorts of stuff, such as alien abduction. I, for one, can't wait.

Well, I could go on for a couple more pages, but that would just be gratuitous...

PS. Long time listeners to V-91 will no doubt recall that Chris and I used to ALWAYS talk over a FFS instrumental. So it's obvious we've liked them for a while now.
